Pre-licensure BSN Admission Criteria/Process

All applicants must meet the general admission requirements of Marshall University as described in the Undergraduate Catalog. Admission to the Pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program is on a competitive basis.The application deadline is January 15. Students may be accepted into the Pre-licensure BSN Program in two ways:

High school seniors
High school seniors with a minimum ACT composite of 21 (or equivalent SAT composite score) and HS GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply. Automatic acceptance is granted to those with an ACT composite of 24 or higher (or equivalent SAT composite score) and HS GPA of 2.5 or higher (pending available space). Successful applicants enter at the freshman level. Progression to the sophomore year of the Pre-licensure BSN program is contingent on completion of all required freshman level courses with a "C" or better by July 15 the year the student is scheduled to begin the sophomore nursing classes. Students who, for whatever reason, are unable to begin the sophomore nursing classes as scheduled must reapply to the program.

Current or previous college students
Current college students or college graduates with an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply. Successful applicants enter at the sophomore level. Applicants must have completed all required freshman level courses with a "C" or better, or be able to successfully complete these courses by July 15 the year of application. Students who, for whatever reason, are unable to begin the sophomore nursing classes as scheduled must reapply to the program.

Important notices when applying:

Background checks and Drug Screens
Prior to beginning clinical, students must complete a background check and drug screen. Based upon the findings, students may not be allowed to continue in the Nursing Program. Additionally the School of Nursing may require students to submit to a drug screen upon reasonable suspicion or cause or may impose random drug testing for students undergoing treatment and/or rehabilitation for substance abuse. Facilities utilized for clinical may have additional requirements at any point in the curriculum that require students submit to additional testing. All drug screens and background checks are the financial responsibility of the student.

Travel Requirements
The School of Nursing utilizes multiple clinical agencies during the course of the Nursing Program. Some of these agencies are outside the immediate campus area (either the Point Pleasant campus or the Huntington campus). It is the student's responsibility to arrange transportation to all clinical sites utilized in the program. During the course of the program, students may be assigned to clinical experiences that may occur any time of the day, any day of the week.

Health Form and Immunizations
Prior to beginning the sophomore nursing courses, students must submit a completed health form and record of immunizations. Clinical agencies may require other immunizations at any point in the curriculum, and it is the responsibility of the student to provide documentation as required.

Required Transcripts
High school students will need to have an official transcript, showing junior year grades and GPA, sent to the university and the SON. Applicants who have attended or are attending another university must provide official transcripts to the university and the SON from those universities for the most current semester. Current Marshall students need not supply transcripts to the SON.

State Board of Nursing
The State Board of Nursing may deny eligibility to sit for the Registered Nurse Licensing Examination to individuals who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony and persons with drug/chemical dependency. Admission to and graduation from the MU School of Nursing does not guarantee applicant will be permitted to sit for the licensing examination.

Application Fee
Applicants must also apply for admisssion to Marshall University. A non-refundable application fee of formattedamountdue is required to complete and submit the School of Nursing application.

Instructions for submitting Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) application:
1. Apply to Marshall University. Admission to Marshall University is required for admission to this program. Transfer students need to apply to Marshall first, but may apply to the MU School of Nursing before official acceptance to MU. Complete between November 15 and January 15 of the year before fall admission.
2. Read/review all the material in the information panel (green panel) to the left prior to completing this application

4. Complete all required fields on this application.
5. Complete application fee payment process (Pay button at the bottom of this application). Once your payment has been accepted your application will be automatically submitted for review.
